CONSTIPATION How to support your little one

Constipation can be defined as the frequency, size, consistency and ease of elimination from ones bowels. In other words, hows your poo? Most children will go through a phase were they suffer from constipation, sometimes it may relieve quickly and in other cases it may take time, some cases as long as 12 months. As a parent it's important to know the tools and tricks to support your child if they ever display signs and symptoms of constipation.

Signs and symptoms of Constipation

  • Large hard stools

  • Small dry pallet stools

  • Infrequent bowel motions

  • Stomach pain

  • With holding behaviours

  • Straining Haemorrhoids T

  • Thick pasty stool (a sign it's backed up in the rectum)

So what is considered a 'Normal' poo? According to the Bristol stool chart, a healthy stool should be a type 4; " Like a sausage or snake, smooth and soft." Other types may indicate possible gut dysfunction. If any symptoms persist, please do not hesitate in seeking further medical advice.

Possible treatment options you can do to help move things along.

So your pretty certain things are just not moving along and the signs and symptoms are there for constipation. The following offers some basic strategies you can use at home.

  • Supplement with a Probiotic. The right probiotic will help with motion frequency. Speak to a qualified Nutritionist for the correct strains to use.

  • Incorporate natural bulking and softening agents to help form soft bowels. This may include slippery elm, psyllium husks and flax seed meal. Adequate water intake must be considered with these agents. A nutritionist will be able to guide you for correct dosage amounts.

  • Foods to consider adding to diet include; Broccoli, apple, carrot, kiwi fruit, pears, legumes, fermented vegetables and kefir.

  • Water, water, water. It's a simple one, but making sure your child has access to clean, fresh water all day is important

Life style considerations

Active children and healthy eating go hand in hand for constipation prevention. For little babies, abdominal massage in a clockwise direction can really benefit. This helps with transit time and opening of the bowels. This can also benefit older children too and can be quite soothing on a sore tummy.
